Psychological Testing for Children
Psychological Assessment Service – Differential Diagnosis
Many families aren’t sure what type of assessment their child needs—and that’s completely okay. We don’t expect parents to know exactly what to ask for. Often, families are referred by a doctor, teacher, or another professional who may have shared a concern, but not the full picture.
Because of this, we take a comprehensive approach to assessments, with the goal of ensuring that nothing is missed. This may involve exploring a range of developmental, learning, or behavioral possibilities—such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), or Global Developmental Delay (GDD)/Intellectual Disability.
We refer to this as a differential assessment, meaning we consider and rule in or out multiple possibilities to arrive at the most accurate understanding of your child’s strengths and needs. At Speech & Language Builders, we offer a comprehensive, evidence-based differential diagnostic assessment led by an experienced, interdisciplinary team:
-
Dr. Lynn Loutzenhiser, Registered Doctoral Psychologist
-
Terryann McCurry, Registered Speech-Language Pathologist
This interdisciplinary approach ensures a well-rounded, accurate understanding of your child’s unique profile across cognitive, communication, emotional, social, and behavioral domains. Together, our team carefully considers overlapping symptoms and contributing factors to arrive at a clear diagnosis and offer tailored recommendations to support your child’s development.
We specialize in assessments for children aged 2 years, 6 months to 12 years, focusing on the identification of:
-
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
-
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
-
Intellectual Disability / Global Developmental Delay
Why a Differential Diagnosis?
A differential diagnosis is a systematic, in-depth process used to distinguish between developmental conditions that can present with similar symptoms—such as autism, ADHD, or language delays. By exploring multiple possibilities and integrating information from parent interviews, standardized testing, clinical observations, and speech-language evaluation, our team can accurately identify what’s truly going on for your child.
This approach is considered best practice because it minimizes the risk of misdiagnosis and ensures that your child receives the most appropriate supports and services from the start. A differential diagnosis provides a clear, comprehensive understanding of your child’s needs and a roadmap for moving forward.
